The Need

IJM is seeking a professional advocate to manage and litigate an active caseload of criminal cases throughout
India. The successful candidate will research and write extensively on issues of procedure, evidence and substantive law.  This position is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and requires significant travel throughout India.  This position reports to the Director of Google Interventions (reporting to the Director of Legal).

Responsibilities

  •     Fully understand the relevant laws and procedures;
  •     Prepare written briefs, memoranda and arguments for various courts with well-researched authorities;
  •     Develop and implement litigation plans for each case;
  •     Manage multiple cases in various jurisdictions simultaneously;
  •     Appear in various courts to prosecute police initiated and private complaint cases;
  •     Initiate and attend regular meetings with government and police officials and with public prosecutors;
  •     Travel regularly throughout India;
  •     Assist partners in investigating and providing aftercare services when needed;
  •     Create networks, develop and maintain strong relationships with partners, local contacts, the bar and government leaders;
  •     Create and provide training to other non-governmental organizations, prosecutors and police and government officials as required;
  •     Provide timely, concise and thorough written reports of all activities;
  •     Manage time and resources effectively;
  •     Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information;
  •     Comply with all laws and ethical cannons; and
  •     Carry out an additional portfolio of assignments given by the Director of Google Interventions.

Required Skills and Experience
  •     Relevant work experience;
  •     Bachelor's Degree in Law or beyond;
  •     Excellent legal research and writing skills;
  •     Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software, Windows 2000 and Windows XP;
  •     Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English, Tamil, and Hindi. Regional languages a plus (Punjabi, Bihari, etc.); and
  •     Organized, meticulous attention to detail.
