The Need

International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking a Director of Research and Training to carry out the
responsibilities below as a member of the Structural Transformation team. The Director of Research and Training will lead his/her team in promoting and ensuring the publication of quality research and data, coordination of research, education, and training, and collaboration with key stakeholders. The Director of Research and Training will also take a leadership role in the development of a national and state reputation for IJM's approach.  This position is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and reports to the Director of Structural Transformation.

Responsibilities

  •     In conjunction with the ST Directors (DOC, DGR&CR, DST) set a strategic plan to attain program goals;
  •     Oversee and promote research to highlight program goals and IJM approach;
  •     Ensure the program has necessary research publications and data to obtain buy-in from key stake holders;
  •     Ensure training materials are developed and kept current for key audiences;
  •     Co-ordinate ST teams research, education, training, and collaboration with key institutes and stake holders; and
  •     At the Director's request perform other duties occasionally that are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Research

  •     Identify research priorities, as part of the strategic function for the ST program;
  •     Oversee generation of secondary research papers, white papers and build a database of key research publications on bonded labour to support advocacy initiatives in India;
  •     Foster partnerships with key universities and research institutes to promote publication of papers on bonded labour and IJM's program rationale;
  •     Take a leadership role in the development of a national and state reputation for IJM's approach;
  •     Ensure production of high quality, peer-reviewed papers and oversee the production of papers by other members of IJM Chennai's leadership team;
  •     Have a knowledge of, and where applicable, involvement in collaborative research within key academic institutions and universities, across the range of disciplines relevant to bonded labour; and
  •     Ensure that IJM has a presence at relevant high-profile national, state and international conferences, in order to disseminate IJM's research findings.

Network Building

    Establish new links with external partners and other relevant organisations and agencies at state and national level; and
    Build upon existing relationships, in order to establish IJM as a centre of policy and practice-relevant, evidence based research.

Research-led Education / Training

  •     Identify training opportunities among key target groups within ST Program;
  •     Develop relevant training material for key target group within ST Program;
  •     Host periodic review of existing training materials to incorporate learning;
  •     Liaise with relevant institutions to encourage institutionalisation of training and education for key stake holders; and
  •     Generate quarterly training reports to promote training opportunities with key institutes.

Required Skills and Experience

  •     Master's degree or above in development studies, labour studies, governance, public administration, or related field;
  •     Experience working on bonded labour and similar social issues affecting SC/ST community;
  •     Experience in liaising and establishing partnerships with key institutes and stakeholders at state level;
  •     Experience in a managing relevant area of research and a proven ability to place published research in reputed publications and journal articles;
  •     Proven ability to obtain invitation to strategic workshops, seminars and deliver research findings;
  •     Proven ability to develop local and external collaborations;
  •     Proven ability to create a strategic vision;
  •     In-depth knowledge of policy advocacy in human rights; and
  •     Experience of working in partnership with individuals and other organisations.

The Mission
International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.
