Evidence for Policy Design (EPoD) at the Center for International Development at Harvard University is a
young, dynamic research initiative that promotes the use of rigorous evidence to inform the design of public policies to more effectively bring about sustainable economic development in low-income countries. Current research topics at EPoD include governance, education, entrepreneurship, health, agriculture, sustainable development, and access to finance.  Geographically, our research covers South Asia, Indonesia, Africa and Latin America, and U.S. projects on health policy and political participation.

EPoD is currently seeking a Research Associate to establish a new project within India related to violence against women (VAW) and female empowerment. The position will require networking with Indian state government officials to create partnerships for the establishment of a randomized control trial (RCT). This RCT will evaluate policy designed to reduce VAW. The Research Associate will manage exploratory research activities related to this topic and lay the groundwork required to implement a full-scale RCT. The Research Associate will also conduct reviews of existing literature and draft a background document for the funders (DFID) on the topic of policy approaches to domestic violence. This position is based in Delhi, but will require travel within India.

Research Associates work closely with academic researchers and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to:  designing survey questionnaires, conducting qualitative research, running pilot exercises, refining study design and surveying instruments, managing survey teams, negotiating contracts with survey firms, checking and analyzing data, cleaning data and assisting in preliminary analysis, assisting in the writing of project reports and policy memos and coordinating with local partners running the programs being evaluated.

Responsibilities:


  •     Create key relationships with state government officials and other potential partners to enable the execution of the research project
  •     Work with local partners in establishing the required infrastructure for the field research component of this project
  •     Draft a comprehensive literature review on domestic violence and related topics, as well as other requirements as established by the funding organization
  •     Others, as required

Basic qualifications:

Masters degree in public policy, economics, international development or related field and 1-2 years of related experience. Bachelors candidates will be considered in exceptional cases. Strong interest in public policy and economic development in low-income countries. Coursework in empirical methods, including econometrics and economics. Excellent English oral and written communication skills.  Experience in financial management and field research.  Computer literacy (including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and computer research skills are vital.  Travel within India required.

Preferred qualifications:
The position requires a self-starting candidate with strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations. Strong Hindi language skills preferred. Experience living and conducting field research in a developing country is a strong plus. Familiarity with randomized control trials is desired.
