The Need
International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking a Research Specialist to carry out the responsibilities below as a member of the Structural Transformation team.  Working under the supervision of the Director of Research
and Training, the Research Associate will be responsible for providing the ST team and key stake holders with research, documentation and analysis to maintain knowledge on the issue and support goals of the program.  This position is based in Chennai and reports to the Director of Research and Education.

Responsibilities

  •     Supports and manages drafting of research and white papers for IJM Chennai;
  •     Conducts desk research, mainly through web and document searches and networking, to enhance advocacy of program goals and the depth of IJM Chennai's knowledge of program logic and ask; follows up with relevant institutes to obtain material;
  •     Identifies relevant forums and platforms and drafts material to workshop program logic and rationale;
  •     Fosters conversation on the issue by drafting replies to journals websites, e-discussion summaries, Updates, Newsletters etc.;
  •     Collaborates with the communications team by organizing workshops and seminars; updates the team with documents and resources that can be shared with key stake holders;
  •     Contributes to advocacy by addressing cutting edge issues of concern to stakeholders;
  •     Under the guidance of the Director of Research helps prepare TORs, research briefs and white papers; participates in workshops and forums and drafts minutes and reports; and
  •     Promotes team-building; contributes to systems development; ensures conformity and compatibility with agreed systems norms and guidelines; shares information on ST initiatives.

Required Skills and Experience

  •     Master's degree or above in development studies, labour studies, governance, public administration, or related field;
  •     Extra trainings in Human rights and advocacy are advantageous;
  •     3 years of either practical substantive experience in the relevant field, or experience in a research or academic capacity;
  •     Extensive experience in carrying out desk research; a journalistic background is helpful;
  •     Knowledge Management and Learning;
  •     Promotes a knowledge sharing and learning culture;
  •     Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of Bonded Labour and Human Rights advocacy;
  •     Good knowledge of the key concerns and challenges facing vulnerable communities especially the SC/ST community;
  •     Development and Operational Effectiveness; and
  •     Excellent drafting and analytical skills; able to communicate concepts clearly through reports and e-mail.

  •     Passionate about the pursuit of justice and eradication of human rights abuses in India;
  •     Leadership and Self-Management;
  •     Highly effective at securing relevant information through desk research, applying web search tools and conventions, and through reporting-style journalism;
  •     Focus on impact and result for the program and responsiveness to feedback;
  •     Ability to think and communicate clearly with others;
  •     Demonstrated abilities to take initiative, build consensus and make things happen; and
  •     Motivated, energetic, thorough and responsive to the needs and interests of peers.

International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems
