The Need

The Director of Communications will develop and manage IJM's communications, the IJM Chennai brand,
media relations, and public relations of IJM Chennai events and programmes.  This position is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and requires some travel throughout India.  This position reports to the Director of Structural Transformation.

Responsibilities

  •     Manage overall communications for IJM Chennai including, spokesperson development, media relations, online campaigns, and Public Relations for Structural Transformation events and programs;
  •     Manage and continue to develop the communications department focusing on informing local and international mindsets about bonded labour slavery;
  •     Serve as Editor and writer by managing IJM Chennai's image in South India and overseeing all IJM Chennai Communications content, reviewing white papers, research briefs, relevant journals etc.;
  •     Develop a communications and media relations strategy to build public will and awareness and further policy advocacy on bonded labour;
  •     Work with the Media Specialist to develop media relations policy, advise staff on public relationship interview and speaking techniques, and establish and cultivate local and national media and public contacts for disseminating information;
  •     Evaluate and prepare reports on the success of IJM's Structural Transformation work at the government and community level for Indian and US audiences;
  •     Compile and document field office stories for wide use by IJM Global Communications in Washington DC;
  •     Create, review and deliver presentations on IJM to a variety of audiences;
  •     Facilitate opportunities for IJM speakers to share the cause of Justice among government power actors, civil leaders, religious institutions, NGOs, corporate leaders, media and the general population;
  •     Ensure that IJM Chennai develops and maintains a photo database to further storytelling;
  •     Secure and effectively manage key relationships with influential power actors to further policy advocacy;
  •     Facilitate and maintain open lines of communication with other IJM Chennai projects to maximize information sharing between the two projects, ensuring professional, timely communications of IJM's bonded labour work to all audiences;
  •     Serve as spokesperson for IJM to varied audiences;
  •     Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information;
  •     Travel for meetings, cases and conferences; and
  •     Carry out additional assignments at the Director of Structural Transformation's request.

Required Skills and Experience

  •     Relevant work experience;
  •     Master's Degree in Management or equivalent experience;
  •     Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software, Windows 2000, Windows XP and server client networks;
  •     A basic knowledge of Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign);
  •     Ability to manage, lead and motivate staff members;
  •     Strong editorial eye and ability to convey IJM's message and image through written, visual and oral communication;
  •     Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Tamil.  Ability to speak and write Telugu, Hindi and Kannada preferred; and
  •     Organized, meticulous attention to detail.

The Mission

International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.
