The Need
Strong relationships with power actors are essential in the work of justice. In this government relations role,
you will have the opportunity to secure and build key relationships as a part of International Justice Mission (IJM), functioning as a key participant in the work of securing justice for the oppressed and vulnerable. The Government Relations – District Advocacy officer will represent IJM to build capacity and increase collaboration with district officials on the issue of Bonded Labour. This position is based in Chennai and reports to the Director of Government and Community Relations.
Responsibilities
Knowledge
Obtain and build upon an in-depth knowledge of the government structure, hierarchy and work style at district and state level; and
Possess knowledge and have relationship with power actors at district and state level.
Systematic and Methodical
- Plan and implement monthly and quarterly meetings across stakeholders;
- Develop detailed strategy mapping stakeholders with intended goals; and
- Think at a macro level and take cognizance of systemic changes required to attain goals.
Training
- Review and customize training content for various stakeholders;
- Liaise with government departments and officials to ascertain training opportunities; and
- Host training sessions on BL for various government and other audiences.
Detailed Documentation
Take detailed notes and generates reports indicating current status of tasks and required follow up.
Required Skills and Experience
- Masters degree in Public Administration or related field with relevant experience;
- Previous experience working closely with the government at district and state in Tamil Nadu;
- Previous experience in advocacy with the government preferably in Human Rights or issues affecting vulnerable communities;
- Previous experience in marketing and/or relationship management;
- Ability to build and maintain good relationships;
- Ability to segregate goals of the team and map it with stakeholders;
- Ability to conform to protocols and polices while networking; and
- Speak and understand Tamil and English [other regional languages a plus].

The Mission
International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.
