 The Need
Assuring justice is served to perpetrators and victims of bonded labour is a pillar of IJM's work. International Justice Mission is seeking an attorney passionate about securing the welfare of bonded labourers and deterring perpetrators to serve as Director of Legal. This position is responsible for managing a team of advocates and an active caseload of criminal cases throughout South India, setting team goals and priorities in a demanding environment, setting a standard of excellent preparation and performance, hard work, empathy, and the highest ethical standards, and liaising with power actors in the courts and local government. The qualified candidate will be a leader with at least one year of experience managing advocates and a litigation docket.

Responsibilities

  •     Lead a team of advocates to bring rescue to victims and accountability to perpetrators of bonded labour;
  •     Manage a busy docket of cases using docket management software;
  •     Excel at interpersonal relations with a range of persons from government officials to victims;
  •     Fully understand the relevant laws and procedures;
  •     Work as a human rights attorney and trains the team similarly for the benefit of sustained client welfare;
  •     Prepare written briefs, memoranda and arguments for various courts with well-researched authorities;
  •     Develop and implement litigation plans for each case using case preparation/prioritization software;
  •     Appear in various courts to prosecute police initiated and private complaint cases;
  •     Understand, carry out, and expand an interdisciplinary approach to securing the rights and well being of victims of bonded labour;
  •     Participate in and conduct trainings in partnership with academies, universities and law colleges;
  •     Provide advice on policy level decisions to IJM departments and to IJM's work in the area of BL, as needed;
  •     Regularly travel throughout India and more specifically in the project area;
  •     Timely, concisely and thoroughly provide written reports of all activities;
  •     Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information;
  •     Comply with all laws and ethical cannons;
  •     Work closely with Director of Casework and other department heads, including aftercare, investigations, administration, and community relations to achieve team goals;
  •     Lead long-term planning, setting of priorities and goals, and execution of important yet non-urgent priorities; and
  •     Carry out an additional portfolio of assignments given by the Director of Casework.

Required Skills and Experience

  •     Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software, Windows 2000, Amicus, Casemap, and Windows XP;
  •     Bachelor's Degree in Law or beyond;
  •     Minimum of one year experience managing advocates and a litigation docket;
  •     Excellent legal research and writing skills;
  •     Experience securing cooperation of government officials preferred; and
  •     Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Tamil; Ability to speak and write Telugu preferred.
