access to financial services for the poor through cutting-edge research, knowledge dissemination and outreach to policy makers and practitioners. CMF's strategy is to use rigorous, empirical research to:
Inform practice: The microfinance sector is evolving rapidly, and practitioners experiment with new products and new programmes. Through research, CMF provides evidence on what works and what does not.
Inform policy: The policy environment for microfinance has important implications for its expansion and its impact. CMF supports policy debates with empirical data and analysis, and provides further insight to policy-makers from its field experience.
Towards this goal, CMF aims to facilitate a process where research questions emerge from the local policy context and policy and programmatic decisions are guided by research outcomes.
Research Associates
CMF’s Research Associates are at the heart of our work. They independently supervise various research projects on behalf of our partners—India's microfinance institutions such as SKS, Spandana and Bandhan and world-class universities such as MIT, Harvard, and Yale. CMF is currently hiring Research Associates for a variety of positions across India
CMF is hiring Research Associates for the following studies:
A study on management practices and profitability in the brick manufacturing industry. Location: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka. RA can be based in either Lucknow or Bangalore.
Impact Evaluation of Access to Finance in Tamil Nadu
Impact Evaluation of health services and livelihoods support for the ultra poor. Location: Calcutta, West Bengal.
Impact evaluation of micro-health insurance. Location: Bangalore, Karnataka.
Impact evaluation of commitment savings products on savings rates. Location: Satara, Maharashtra
Impact evaluation of price information on agricultural investments. Location: Bangalore, Karnataka.
Key responsibilities of the Research Associate
Research Associates work closely with academic researchers and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to:
- Overseeing the implementation of the impact evaluation, in association with the partner organization
- Designing survey questionnaires, conducting qualitative research, running pilot exercises, refining study design and surveying instruments
- Managing teams: Recruiting, training, and supervising both field-based and data operations teams consisting of project assistants, field managers, field-based surveyors, data entry operators and other field and office staff
- Maintaining relationship with partner financial institution at both headquarters and field levels
- Maintaining relationship with partner academic institutions
- Ensuring quality of data during data collection and assisting with data cleaning
- Conducting basic data analysis using statistical methods
- Identifying and collecting useful administrative data
- Disseminating preliminary and final research results through publications, conferences, and/or innovative methods such as podcasts or blog articles
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelors degree in economics, social sciences, or other international development-related field required; Masters degree preferred
- Fluency in English required; fluency in Hindi preferred
- Previous experience in development research preferred
- Familiarity with statistical analysis packages (eg SPSS, Stata, R) preferred
- Flexibility and ability to deal with uncertainty. Adaptability to project needs and schedules.
- Experience and maturity in relationship management
- Ability to work independently
- Willingness to travel required
