The Need
IJM Bangalore is seeking to build new relationships with the media, and to communicate the injustice of bonded labour in a clear and compelling way—both in India and abroad—in order to effect long lasting transformation and, ultimately, the eradication of bonded labour in India. The Communications Specialist (CS) will be responsible for bringing the injustice of bonded labour to the fore within the public sphere by creating compelling content for dissemination in a variety of contexts. In order to engage hearts and minds to seek change, the CS will engage in a variety of activities, including writing, graphic design & branding, assisting with event planning, and using technology to communicate. This position is based in Bangalore, India, and reports to the Director of Media and Public Relations.
Responsibilities
Writing and Publications
- Document and draft short compelling stories about IJM's casework for various audiences;
- Coordinate with the casework teams to understand news/stories from the field;
- Develop creative tools of communication to create awareness and communicate about bonded labour to different stakeholders;
- Write and disseminate regular press releases, quarterly press briefings, and editorials for distribution to the media;
- Create media materials and a portfolio of articles related to IJM's work, bonded labour, child labour and relevant news;
- Write, develop and oversee production of print materials for press kits, media trainings, and interactions with the media;
- Written work in both English and Kannada; and
- Manage the field office's alignment with IJM's Global Messaging and Communication policy.
Branding, Messaging and Marketing
Develop and promote branding practices in collaboration with the IJM Global Communications department;
Work with staff to create and utilize effective electronic mediums for all internal and external communication;
Create and maintain social media and web presence—including Facebook, Twitter, blogs and YouTube; and
Assist with planning and managing events, such as government & police trainings, and Advocacy Campaigns.
Internal Communications
Work with the Director of Public Relations to develop communication policies for the office;
Advise staff on public relationship interview and speaking techniques; and
Work with IJM headquarters in Washington DC to ensure all media interactions are conducted in line with IJM's professionalism and policy.
Teamwork
- Maintain open lines of communication with IJM Casework and Advocacy departments to maximize information sharing between the two projects.
- Create content & storytelling pieces in coordination with all Casework and Advocacy departments in order to facilitate professional, timely communications of IJM's bonded labour work to the media and public audiences.
Travel Requirements
Travel for meetings, cases and conferences; and
Carry out additional assignments at the Director of Public Relation's request.
Required Skills and Experience
- Master or bachelor's degree in marketing or communications;
- 3-4 years of relevant work experience;
- Ability to write compelling stories, articles and press releases;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software, Windows 7, Windows XP, and server-client networks;
- Knowledge of Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign);
- Strong editorial eye and ability to convey IJM's message and image through written, visual and oral communication;
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Kannada. Ability to speak and write Telugu, Hindi and Oriya preferred;
- Organized, meticulous attention to detail; and
- Experience with branding and use of social media preferred.
