In all of its policy research and work with institutions, WRI tries to build bridges between ideas and action, meshing the insights of scientific research, economic and institutional analyses, and practical experience with the need for open and participatory decision-making. WRI's work is carried out by a 150 member interdisciplinary staff augmented by a network of advisors, collaborators, partners, and cooperating institutions in more than 50 countries.
EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute's Center for Sustainable Transport, is seeking an Associate for its Research and Practice group (R&P) in India. The successful candidate will be based in Bangalore and will report to the Strategy Head, Research and Practice, while working closely with team members in other groups (Integrated Transport, Urban Development and Accessibility, Energy and Climate). With strong research and analytical skills, writing and communication skills, and interest in transport, energy, economic development, and urban planning issues, the Associate is expected to work independently to contribute to research activities and deliver publications.
Responsibilities
• Under supervision of the Strategy Head, undertake research and analysis across EMBARQ's and WRI's program areas involving the fields of transport, urban planning, climate change, economics and energy issues.
• Participate actively in EMBARQ and WRI India's ambitious and innovative growth strategy, by pursuing challenging and new areas of research and disseminating results widely.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key research organizations and universities throughout India and internationally, to expand EMBARQ's and WRI's research influence in India.
• Organize, facilitate and/or attend workshops and similar events that are relevant to ongoing research efforts at EMBARQ and WRI India.
• Take charge of specific research and analytical tasks, demonstrating resourcefulness in completing them on time, with rigor, and high quality.
• Be willing to learn about EMBARQ and WRI's work across program areas, provide sound technical/analytical assistance across areas, and review publications.
• Be willing to work in start-up environments and work independently with limited direction to develop research plans
• Bring strong organizational skills and be comfortable with interdisciplinary, inter-programmatic research, working with teams across time zones
• Communicate ideas effectively verbally and in writing; represent the R&P work in internal meetings and external conferences; publish posts on EMBARQ blog TheCityFix focusing on EMBARQ's research activities.
Qualifications
• Post Graduate/Master's degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Science or Planning, Transport Planning, Development Studies, Economics, Policy Studies, or equivalent.
• At least four years of work experience demonstrating publication record with strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
• Proven track record of managing staff and teams, working with external partners.
• Evidence of strong organizational skills to deliver high quality analytical/research pieces at short turnaround time.
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work under pressure with tight deadlines.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with international teams across the EMBARQ and WRI network.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with respect to presenting at conferences, writing academic and policy papers, and conducting trainings of professionals.
• Good computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), statistical software packages like SPSS and Stata.
• Capability to learn and use software applications for budgeting, financing, and reporting that are used by EMBARQ and WRI.
• Commitment to EMBARQ's mission as well as WRI's mission and values.
• Eligibility to work in India.
