Location: Kenya & India
Programme: Social Development - Education
Agency: Aga Khan Academies
Deadline: 10 Mar 2013
The Aga Khan Academies are an integrated network of residential schools
dedicated to expanding access to education of an international standard
of excellence to exceptional young men and women regardless of their
ability to pay. Envisaged in Africa, South and Central Asia and the
Middle East, the Aga Khan Academies foundational values include
pluralism, meritocracy and civil society. Housed in spacious and
attractive campuses with outstanding facilities the Academies offer the
International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum from Primary Years to the
Diploma and provide a rich opportunity for both teachers and students
alike to grow both professionally and personally. The first Aga Khan
Academy opened in Mombasa, Kenya in 2003 and the second in Hyderabad,
India in 2011.
The Position
With the aim of bringing diverse perspectives and fresh energy to the
Aga Khan Academies, we recruit annually a small number of recent
graduates from well-respected universities to serve as Aga Khan Academy
Teaching Fellows on campus in Mombasa, Kenya, or in Hyderabad, India.
Normally appointed for a two-year period, the Teaching Fellows work with
gifted and talented students from diverse ethnic, religious and
socioeconomic backgrounds. Each Teaching Fellow lives in an apartment in
a student residence and works as a Dorm Parent, promoting community
life in that residence. In addition, a Teaching Fellow may carry some of
the following additional responsibilities:
The opportunity to teach under the careful mentorship of an experienced
master teacher. Each Teaching Fellow is assigned to a mentor to guide
his/her class/lab preparation and student assessment. Given their
extensive involvement in campus life, Teaching Fellows teach fewer hours
than full-time faculty members.
Tutoring individual students or study groups
Involvement in the administrative work of offices such as Admissions, University Counseling, or Student Life.
Coaching athletic teams.
Providing music lessons.
Chaperoning off-campus field trips.
Advising student clubs and organizations, including introducing new
student activities to campus (depending on a Teaching Fellow's interests
and experiences).
Engagement in the Enrichment Program and CAS (creativity, action, service) programme.
Involvement and further development of the Student Leadership Development programme.
The Requirements
Ideal candidates will have the following profile:
Excellent academic achievement at a highly respected university.
A record of significant involvement in residential, student leadership,
music, theatre, athletic and/or community service during university.
Genuine interest in and commitment to the development mission of the Aga Khan Academies.
Knowledge of the admissions processes for highly selective North
American and/or British universities; the ability to guide Academy
students interested in applying to such universities would be especially
helpful.
Based on current anticipated needs for 2013-14, preference will be given
to individuals with a strong background in one or more of the following
areas: Economics, ESL, French, Mathematics, or Music. Evidence
reflecting the ability to support one or more of the following will be
advantageous: Student Leadership Development programme, SAT preparation,
University Counseling, and Physical Education.
Prior experience in the developing world is less important than openness to the learning one may experience there.
Interested candidates should submit a letter describing their
background, the basis of their interest, and their qualifications, along
with a current curriculum vitae. Please also indicate a geographic
preference, if any.
