Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), is an international non-profit research organization. Based in New Haven, CT, with offices in Washington, D.C. and worldwide, IPA works with development partners and academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches to solving development problems, to communicate “what works” in development and to scale up successful projects in a variety of fields, including health, education, microfinance, governance and agriculture.

Position Summary:

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a United States based not-for-profit organization which conducts important research on innovative solutions to combat poverty worldwide and disseminates the results to government, non-government and private sector leaders. The IPA Bangladesh is a liaison office registered with the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies & Firms and the Board of Investment.

IPA is currently seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Project Associate for a research project on electronic wage payments for salaried factory workers in Bangladesh.  The evaluation is a randomized controlled trial that is being carried out in cooperation with several local banks and firms in the textile sector at field sites in the greater Dhaka area. Outcomes of interest include household savings, consumption, remittances, and job performance among factory workers participating in the study. The principal investigators are Emily Breza (Columbia Business School) and Martin Kanz (World Bank).

The Project Associate will work closely with the project staff on the ground and researchers at the World Bank and Columbia University.  This position will require significant responsibility managing relationships with banks and partner firms. The project will also involve a significant amount of data management and quality control. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and to have significant responsibility in a young, vibrant organization undertaking cutting-edge development research.

Qualifications:

  •     A Bachelor’s degree in economics, development studies, or related field
  •     Ability to work with large household survey datasets
  •     Fieldwork experience, especially with randomized control trials (RCTs)
  •     Proficient in STATA, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Email and Internet
  •     Fluency and excellent communication skills in English
  •     Excellent professional, management and organizational skills
  •     Flexible, self-motivating and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
  •     Highly organized and detail-oriented
  •     Master’s degree in economics, development studies, or related field
  •     Fluency in Bangla
  •     Experience managing survey teams
